What is Cambodia ICT Camp?

Cambodia ICT Camp 2018 is a five-day workshop on open data, innovation, citizenship, and information communication technology. During the camp, national participants will board learn how to securely adapt technologies to tackle social and environmental issues in their communities.

The 2018 Camp especially encourages participants from independent media, civil society organizations, community workers, local government officials, the private sector, university lecturers and students, and startups in Cambodia.

The 2018 camp follows a series of successful Mekong ICT Camps, the most recent in 2017. At that event, a Cambodian ICT Camp was proposed.

When will the camp be held?

The Cambodia ICT Camp is a five-day event that will be held 17–21 December 2018.

Where will the camp be held?

All the activities included in the Cambodia ICT Camp will be held at Sokha Siem Reap Resort and Convention Center in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

What is the relationship between the Cambodia ICT Camp and Mekong ICT Camp?

The Cambodia ICT Camp is a localized event that developed from the Mekong ICT Camp. The Mekong Camp has been organized since 2008 for communities with diverse backgrounds from the Lower Mekong sub-region. The Mekong ICT Camp has covered three main topics: innovative practice, civic participation in governance and technology infrastructure. This year will be the first for a Cambodia ICT Camp to be held in Cambodia for local participants from ICT communities.

Who is eligible to participate in the camp?

The camp is open to Cambodian nationals only. This event encourages participation from independent media, civil society organizations, community workers, local government officials, university lecturers, and students. Each participant is required to attend the whole camp event 17–21 December 2018. For the speakers and facilitators, the camp is open to everyone around the world.

How can I take an active part in the camp?

If you apply to be a speaker, you can also take part in a panel discussion or run a workshop during the camp. Each participant can take part in the Cambodia ICT Innovation Fund with your initiative projects/ideas.

How can I register to be a participant?

In order to participate in the Cambodia ICT Camp, you need to fill in the Participant Registration Form. The result of your participation status will be confirmed via email.

How can I register to be a speaker during the camp?

In order to be a speaker at the Cambodia ICT Camp, you need to fill in the Speaker Registration Form. The result of your participation status will be confirmed via email.

Is this camp a fully funded program?

For selected candidates to participate in the camp, the Cambodia ICT Camp will fully cover all the expenses on accommodation, traveling, and meal during the five-day event from 17-21 December 2018 with the exception of the USD 50 registration fee.

Is there a registration fee to participate in this camp?

Yes, the USD 50 registration fee applies to all participants who will be selected to join the camp.

When should I pay the registration fee?

The registration fee will be payable on the first day of the camp. If possible, the exactly among of the registration fee in cash as we don’t have any change at Camp.

After applying through the application form, will I be able to participate in this camp?

The application will not ensure your participation in the camp. You will get a notification via the email address you provided if you are selected to participate.

What language will be used for training and communication during the camp?

Most sessions and training will be undertaken in Khmer. However, some sessions will be in English as some speakers/facilitators are non-Khmer speakers. We will try to select participants who can manage some communication in English.

Will I receive a certificate of participation at the end of the Camp?

Yes, you will receive a certificate of participation. Speakers, facilitators, and sponsors will get a certificate of appreciation.

What is the dress code during the event?

The dress code for the event is causal.

How will the accommodation be arranged?

The accommodation will be at the event hotel and will be arranged with two people per room. Each room has a shared bathroom and basic toiletries. The accommodation will include breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There’s a swimming pool so bring a swimsuit if you want to get into the water.

Can I leave to anywhere during the Camp?

For safety reasons, all participants should not leave the venue.

How the Internet and mobile coverage are provided?

Internet will be provided at the venue by the hotel. However, it may be limited, so you are encouraged to avoid large downloads.

If you would like to have sufficient Internet service on your devices, you can use the mobile phone data. For International speakers and facilitators, we recommend buying Smart or Cellcard which can be purchased at the airport.

NOTE: Cambodia ICT Camp is a unique opportunity to meet and collaborate with others, so we suggest you be present in the camp and give your phone and computer a bit of a rest.

How will meals be served?

Meals will be served at the venue of the camp.

What should I prepare for the camp?

  • Development workers, journalists, and others with data and technical problems to solve should bring descriptions of those problems, resources, reports, datasets, equipment or anything else that will help others understand and solve the problem.
  • We encourage participants to lead discussions. All participants can consider bringing problems, ideas, stories, tools, equipment or websites to present to others.
  • A computer is required in most of the hands-on sessions. Participants are advised to bring their personal laptop computer with them. The camp will not provide the computer to participants.
  • If you have a camera, video recorder, voice recorder or any other equipment, please bring them, as you may find it useful and interesting to use them during the workshop.

What should I bring as a participant to the camp?

International speakers and facilitators:

  • Passport
  • Boarding pass: please make sure you keep your boarding passes; upon check-in at the Camp, the organizer of registration will collect boarding passes from you.

Local participant, speakers including VIP delegation from government representatives

  • ID card or passport

How do I get to the camp?

International participants: You will be scheduled an airport transfer by our organizing team and they will assist you to get to the event hotel.

Local participants: The organizer will arrange a bus to transport participants from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and vice versa. For participants from Battambang, Kampong Thom, Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat provinces, please go directly to Siem Reap on December 16, 2018, and please make sure that you arrive Sokha Siem Reap Resort and Convention Center before 5 pm so you can attend the welcome dinner. Please note that organizers will not be responsible for your related costs before and after the Camp.

How do I get a Cambodian visa?

Organizers will issue an invitation letter to speakers, facilitators and participants. However, you are responsible for acquiring your visa to enter Cambodia.
